A Quick Escape – Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah
Since moving back to Utah, I’ve been making a conscious effort to stop avoiding one of the most beautiful physical features in the area – the winding canyons, thick with aspen trees. You’re probably wondering why I would want to avoid something so beautiful.
The sad fact is, I’ve let fear get the best of me.
My family used to love spending time up the canyon. We’d ski in the winter and go boating, hiking, camping, and off-roading in the summer. In a family with 3 boys, it was pure joy.
That all changed several years ago when my sister in law was killed in a car accident while driving in the cayon. That, compounded with the fact that not long before, I’d rolled a 4-wheeler over on myself and my husband had rolled his FJ down a sand dune with my kids in it, left me fairly terrified of something that my family used to enjoy.
I’m really just a big chicken.
Attending Evo Conference was the first time I’ve even driven through the canyon in several years and it was a white knuckle experience that left me feeling exhausted by the time I arrived at The Canyons Resort.
But I’d made it there.
When I was invited to a fun girls weekend away at the Zermatt Resort in Midway (and on my fake birthday no less, but that’s another story) I knew I couldn’t let my fears get in the way of taking the chance to live a bit.
So I passed my kids off to my husband for the night and met up with some of the great ladies from the Utah Bloggers Meetup Group.
We started the weekend with dinner at Schneitter’s at the Zermatt Resort. I’m sure all the other guests were baffled by this table full of women taking a picture of all their food but it was too pretty not to.
I’m actually still craving the cheese sauce – I think it was gouda – and the heavenly wedge salad. I may have to make the trip back up there just for those two things. Yes, they were really that good and I have a thing for appetizers.
It’s funny how easy it is to get caught up in our busy lives that we don’t get a chance to explore some of the great places within driving distance. I have somewhat mixed feelings about the whole staycation idea because it’s way too easy to get caught up in your regular routine when you are close to home but I love the idea of getting out and exploring things that are close to where you live.
Even though my family recently moved back to Utah from San Diego, we did live here for well over 10 years before and still I had no idea the Zermatt Resort was even there, or that it offered such a great spot spot for a weekend escape.
We were in a 3 bedroom suite that was gorgeous. It was filled with furniture that looked like it belonged in a model home rather than a hotel and the whole thing was actually bigger than our house in California had been.
The next morning we walked across the street to have breakfast at Fanny’s Grill, which is part of The Homestead Resort. We had a delicious breakfast buffet that had everything you’d want in a breakfast.
I could seriously go on and on about the delicious food from the entire weekend but I’m making myself hungry.
After breakfast, our group split up and I ended up with the group that was going to head up the mountain on an ATV. Remember my last experience with a 4-wheeler? I was a bit nervous but at least this time I was in an ATV with a full roll cage and in great company.
As we headed up the mountain, we were all struck by the pure beauty of the area. You get a bit dusty on the ATVs but it was well worth it for the views that we were rewarded with.
Disclosure: Food, lodging and entertainment were provided to me by the Zermatt Resort as part of a Utah Bloggers Meetup event.
