Are you looking for an awesome DIY project that your dog will love?
This DIY tennis ball sock toy is so easy to make and your pet will have a blast with it.
My family added a new family member a few weeks ago. Meet Ted, a 2 year old Australian Shepherd mix that found his way into our life recently.
My kids have been begging for a dog for years. I’ve told them for years that I only potty train one thing at a time. With 6 kids, you can imagine, there’s been a lot of years where we’ve had a kid in diapers. We currently have 2 in diapers with the twins so I told my kids they would be waiting for a while.
Fortunately, Ted came potty trained so my kids found a loophole.
He has been such a great addition to our family. He has been super patient with all the little girls in the house and my son, who suffers from anxiety, has really latched on to him and loves having someone to cuddle when he’s feeling overwhelmed.
We have decided that Ted is addicted to tennis balls though. He is constantly dropping them at our feet. If you don’t throw it right away, he usually runs off and finds a second one to bring you.
Since he has made my kids so happy, we’ve been working hard to make sure he has everything he needs. We’ve been feeding him Purina Beneful Originals since that is what his previous owner had been feeding him. I just found out that Purina Beneful Originals has been reformulated and now featuring meat as the #1 ingredient and has no sugar added. I love knowing that we are feeding him quality food so we know he’ll stay healthy.
Purina took feedback from real pet owners over a 2 year period of time so they knew what pet owners wanted. Most said, that first ingredient was so important. I know when shopping for food for my family, I put a lot of stock in the ingredient that it listed first so I’ll definitely be doing that with dog food now.
You can find Purina Beneful Originals at most mass retailers including Target, Walmart and Regional Grocers like Kroger and Albertsons. I usually find ours at our local Walmart because it is easy to grab a bag while I’m grabbing other things we need.

We wanted to make Ted something as a treat for him since we’ve been having so much fun with him. This DIY tennis ball sock dog toy was super easy to make and makes it a bit easier to throw (and find) all those tennis balls we have lying around the house.
Materials Needed
- Long sock
- Tennis ball
- scissors
Instructions
Cut long strips in the socks, starting at the open end and leave 5-6 inches at the top un-cut.
You can cut as many strips as you want. I did 4 strips because I wanted them nice and wide so they would hold up to heavy play.
Push the tennis ball into the end of the sock.
Take two of the strips of fabric across from each other and tie them in a knot then do the same for the opposite side.
Repeat this to make sure the tennis ball is secure.
This was a huge hit at my house and our dog didn’t want to give it up. Usually he drops tennis balls as fast as he can to try and encourage someone to throw them for him.
This is great for playing tug of war with too.
You could make holiday versions of this by buying seasonal socks. My son definitely wants to buy some Christmas socks to make Ted a Christmas present this year.
Great idea! That must be one strong sock to not rip apart! Also, thumbs up to the kids for finding a loophole! 🙂
