I went back to work shortly after my oldest son was born. I spent a lot of time stressing out about leaving him, but the hassles of pumping in public didn’t occur to me until I woke up in a panic a few days before I was supposed to return to work. I had mastered pumping at home — you know, in my bedroom with complete privacy and a locking door — but I worked at a residential treatment center where locking doors were taboo and teenage boys roamed the halls. How in the world could you pump in a situation like that?

Fortunately, a coworker had returned from maternity leave not long before I did and paved the way for pumping at work. Everyone was very supportive but I still had to deal with the lack of locking doors situation. I found a quiet room and put a sign on the door to stay out, which worked well for the first few weeks. Unfortunately, teenage boys tend to not pay attention to little details like obvious signs on the door.

I may or may not have scarred a teenage boy for life when he walked in on me pumping and was too stunned to turn around and shut the door.

Back then, I had no idea nursing covers existed, but they would have saved me so much stress, not only for nursing in public (which was another hurdle of new motherhood I had to tackle) but for pumping at work.

I realize that there are many mothers who prefer to nurse discreetly without any sort of covering, but that’s never been my thing. I’ll nurse anywhere and everywhere but I like to be covered up because it makes me feel more comfortable so a Bebe au Lait nursing cover is a great alternative to an awkward blanket.

The fabric is light enough that even during the summer months neither you or your baby should be bothered by it. The rigid neckline actually works to pull the fabric away from your body too which allows for great air circulation. The whole thing folds up extremely small (smaller than most baby blankets) so it will fit easily in any diaper bag.

 Lillie Throw Blankie

Lillie by Bebe au Lait has come out with the Lillie Throw Blankie and this has all the makings of a perfect comfort item. Upon first glance, this appears to be nothing more than a soft ball. The exterior of the ball is made of super soft spandex that feels great when you squish it. This ball transforms into a great little blankie made of plush fleece with a silky satin edge.

Older babies will love the versatility of a toy and comfort item rolled into one. For younger babies, I love the way storing the blankie as a ball keeps it nice and clean so you don’t have to worry about it picking up any bits from your diaper bag.
