Do you have kids who suffer from motion sickness?
There’s nothing that spoils your fun more than dealing with motion sickness when you are supposed to be having a great day at an amusement park or on a family trip.
A few of my kids inherited my tendency towards motion sickness. Sorry, guys. We’ve learned some great tricks to help us deal with motion sickness and make sure it doesn’t spoil our fun.
My family travels quite a bit. With a family of 8, that most often involves a road trip.
A road trip through the windy canyon roads we often travel with kids sitting towards the back of a full-size van is a recipe for motion sickness.
We’ve gotten smart though and on our most recent family trip we didn’t have anyone get car sick and no one felt gross after a day at an amusement park.
Here’s what we did:
Have kids take Dramamine® for Kids before a road trip (or anything else that has the potential for motion sickness). Dramamine® for Kids is the only medicated motion sickness relief product formulated just for children ages 2-12 from the #1 Pharmacist recommended brand. It prevents prevents nausea, dizziness, vomiting and queasiness so it’s perfect for kids who deal with motion sickness.
We’ve had great luck with Dramamine® for Kids and it has saved us on more than one occasion with one of my sons who really struggles on road trips. We keep one of the convenient travel packs in my car at all times so it is ready when we need it.
We went on a boat ride as a family once and one of my older kids started feeling sick. We only had Dramamine® in pill form. He usually doesn’t have a problem swallowing pills but when he wasn’t feeling well, he really struggled and couldn’t get the pill down. He is old enough to take the adult version but in this situation, I really wished I had a chewable option for him.

Snack frequently. When you are dealing with motion sickness, snacking is probably not the first thing on your mind. I’ve found, with my kids at least, that if I can prevent their stomach from getting too empty, they don’t deal with motion sickness quite as badly as they do when they have an empty stomach. Definitely make sure they aren’t getting overly full (that can cause all kinds of additional problems) but have them snack on crackers and granola bars throughout the day to make sure an empty stomach doesn’t aggravate their motion sickness.
Sit towards the front. On car rides, we try and keep kids who deal with motion sickness towards the front of the car. This makes it easier for them to look straight ahead (which helps with motion sickness), get additional airflow, and avoid some of the bumps they’d deal with in the back of the car.
Space out rides at parks. If you are at an amusement park, I have my kids who deal with motion sickness space out the rides. There’s usually lots of ways to stay entertained between rides and avoiding riding more aggressive rides back-to-back gives them time to recover in between.
Avoid additional motion. If you are riding on a boat and your kids deal with motion sickness, be sure you encourage your kids to stay as still as they can. My kids are active and the last thing they usually want to do is slow down, even when they aren’t feeling well. This is also where taking Dramamine® for Kids ahead of time can help.
