School is finally out for summer and the very first thing on our list is to jump into our summer reading plan. Every summer we have a big summer reading launch party to get everyone excited about reading. This year, with the release of the How to Train Your Dragon 3 Walmart Exclusive DVD Gift Set happening so close to the end of the school year, it was the perfect choice for our summer reading launch party.

My kids have loved all the How to Train Your Dragon movies. They have been anxiously waiting for How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World to be released so that they could watch it at home.
The timing was perfect because it was released this week, just in time for school to get out for the summer. We snagged the How to Train Your Dragon 3 Walmart Exclusive DVD Gift Set and a few of our favorite dragon toys to celebrate. This set includes 2 Funko keychains that are absolutely adorable! You can find How to Train Your Dragon apparel and toys at Walmart right now.

We absolutely loved How to Train Your Dragon 3. My girls were so excited that there is a girl dragon in the movie. The Light Fury dragon adds such a fun element to the movie and the animation on her was just gorgeous. I’d recommend watching some of the bonus features that come with the DVD set because it is so fun to see the creative process behind the movie.
How to Train Your Dragon 3 follows the characters through some hard things and they experience major growth by the end of the movie. For me, (spoiler alert) it was fun to see Hiccup as an adult at the end of the movie and I loved that they made a hard choice because they wanted to do the right thing.

Every year we have a summer reading launch party where we watch a movie that is based on a book. How to Train Your Dragon is based on a 12-book series that is perfect for young readers.
This year we are keeping track of the books we read with this fun printable.

It’s fun to see how many books we have read and my kids are going to have the opportunity to win activities (like going to the movies, visiting a museum, or going out to eat) for meeting their reading goals.

This will help us make sure we are doing plenty of reading throughout the summer and setting some fun bucket list goals at the same time.
You can snag this free printable here to set your own summer reading goals.
Our end of the year How to Train Your Dragon viewing was a great way to celebrate the end of another school year and launch our summer reading goals. My kids are currently obsessed with all things dragon and it is so fun to see a few of my older boys playing with their younger sisters.
One of my boys even dressed up as a Viking. We all had a good laugh about that!
