Mealtime Tips for Twins

These twins are something else. When I found out I was having twins, I honestly thought I knew what I was getting into. I’ve done this before. All of it. I’ve changed diapers and wiped noses, and rocked babies in the middle of the night. I thought twins just meant I would do it twice.
The past 15 months have been some of the craziest, stressful, and most exciting months of my life. Now that they are up and walking around, our life pretty much revolves around food. We are either feeding them, cleaning up after feeding them, or buying more food for them.
It’s a never ending cycle.
They LOVE food and I try my best to make sure to fill the up with good foods, foods with real ingredients that will help them grow and develop the way they need to. It’s hard to get one-on-one time as a twin but one of the ways we try and do that is by taking them grocery shopping one at a time.
They love the attention and they get so excited when they see foods they want to try on the shelves. These girls know what they want. They may not be talking much yet but they definitely make all kinds of noises when they want to tell you something.
On our last shopping trip, Miss Sarah discovered that our local Albertsons has a great selection of Sprout® Organic baby food. We love the little baby food pouches with the twins because feeding them both at the same time can be challenging. The pouches let them feed themselves. They are so independent right now that I’m not even sure they would let me feed them anymore.
I hadn’t tried Sprout® Organic baby before but I love that they are USDA certified organic, Non GMO and don’t have any acid preservatives like ascorbic acid like so many of the other brands do. My older daughter was really sensitive to any sort of acid preservatives in baby food and she used to get a terrible diaper rash whenever she ate them so I really wish these were around when she was a baby.
We found Sprout® Organic baby food at our local Albertsons. Go here to see where you can find them in your local area.
Mealtime Tips for Twins
So how do we keep mealtime manageable with two babies?
- Opt for self-feeding. I would be feeding the twins all day if I fed each of them individually. We love the baby food pouches like Sprout® Organic baby food or finger foods because the twins can feed themselves.
- Ditch the bibs. Strip down to a diaper. I’ve given up trying to keep the twins clean during mealtime. Since they are feeding themselves there is always a mess. I just strip them down to a diaper, clean them up, then redress them when they are done. Much easier than messing up multiple outfits a day.
- Feed at the same time. I try and keep my twins on the same schedule as much as I can. Mealtime definitely needs to happen at the same time or I’d be spending all my time in the kitchen.
- Make mealtime fun. Eating teaches toddlers so many important developmental skills. Don’t stress too much about the mess. Focus on the experience. I put my twins next to each other because they like to share food with each other. It’s the cutest thing ever to see them feeding each other. They each have their own food preferences so they’ll feed the foods they don’t like to the other twin.
Feeding twins is challenging but mealtime at my house comes with a lot of laughs.
