Sweet Potato Chili (with an unexpected ingredient!)

I make chili an embarrassingly number of times every month. It’s a simple meal that’s easy to feed a crowd and I know my kids will eat it. Sometimes you need to change things up a bit though. This Sweet Potato chili recipe is packed with ground beef, back beans, and tasty little bites of sweet potato that give it an amazing texture!
This recipe has a different flavor that your standard chili. It has a secret ingredient . . . cinnamon! The first time I tasted it I wasn’t so sure what I thought. I’m a creature of habit so changing up my tried and true recipe (like my favorite turkey chili) takes some getting used to. The sweet and spicy combination in this really grew on me though and I love it so much that I’ve made it several times already.
Sweet Potato Chili Ingredients
- 1 pound of ground beef or turkey
- 2 onions, diced
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 can black beans, rinsed
- 1 can pinto beans rinsed
- 2 large sweet potatoes, cut into cubes
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 4 cups of water
- 1 Tbsp. Salt
- 1 Tbsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. chili powder
- 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 1 Tbsp. cinnamon

Sweet Potato Chili Preparation

Simmer for 20-30 minutes then add the diced sweet potatoes. Simmer for another 10-15 minutes or until the sweet potatoes can be stabbed with a fork.
Serve with a dollop of sour cream.
