Are you counting down the days until summer?
My family is so ready for summer to start. We have lots of plans for hiking, camping, and swimming. Summer is a great chance to recharge but what do you do to prevent summer learning loss?
As a mom of 6, I love the chance to relax and have fun together as a family during the summer months but I do worry about summer learning loss.
Kids work so hard during the school year that I hate to see them take a step backwards during the summer.
We have some great ideas to help you prevent summer learning loss and have a lot of fun at the same time!
Visit museums
Museums are a great way to get kids’ brains going and expose them to new things while having fun together as a family. We love checking out new museums, both locally and when we travel. My kids have great memories of the places we have visited and often, visiting a museum will spark a new interest for them.
Summer Bridge Activities from Carson-Dellosa Publishing
We’ve used the summer bridge activity books from Carson-Dellosa Publishing with my kids for years. This award-winning series helps prevent summer learning loss in only 15 minutes a day. I’ll often sit down with my kids while they work on this and they love showing off the things they have learned during the school year.
As a mom, sometimes I worry whether or not I’m reviewing everything I need to be during the summer so I love how neatly everything is laid out in these books.
Participate in a Summer Reading Program
Reading is one of the best ways to prevent summer learning loss. Check with your local library and see if they have a summer reading program. A little incentive can go a long way towards getting kids excited about reading. Your kids may even discover a new favorite book after talking to their favorite librarian.
Have a Lemonade Stand
Do your kids need a little practice counting money? A lemonade stand is the perfect way to do it. Your kids will love running their own lemonade stand and the opportunity to earn a little bit of spending money at the same time. Team up with the neighborhood kids to make it a group effort.
Go on a Nature Hike
Are your kids interested in learning about plants and animals? Let them learn first-hand by heading out on a nature hike. Have your kids bring a sketchbook to draw pictures of the things that they see along the way. They’ll love looking back at their drawings at the end of the summer.
Do a science project
It doesn’t get much more exciting than a goopy gooey science project. Find out what your kids are interested in and then hunt down a project you can do together. My kids love our soda bottle compost bottles and making homemade goop.
Put your kids in charge of grocery shopping
One of my favorite ways to work on math skills is to put my kids in charge of grocery shopping. I give each of them a budget for something we need from the bulk section and have them measure and do the math to make sure they get the right amount. They love it and it’s a great practical math experience.
