Back to School Fashion on a Budget
Back to school fashion can be a bit of a challenge when you are on a budget. In our family of 8, we are always looking to stretch our back to school budget and make sure we are getting great clothes for an even better price.
Over the years, we have learned some fantastic tricks to make sure that our kids wardrobes are filled with clothes they love and the quality that means I won’t have to replace them a few months down the road.
Are you looking to save some money on your back to school fashions? Check out these tips before you head to the store.
Dress things up with a button-up shirt.
Most kids like to be comfortable so their basic, everyday outfits veer towards the casual. Keep the comfort while taking things up a notch with a stylish button-up shirt.
We love this stylish button-up Moto shirt and at 40% off you sure can’t beat the price!
Any little boy would love to show up to the first day of school pairing this shirt with a great pair of jeans.
Invest in good basics.
Speaking of a great pair of jeans, it’s worth investing in a few great basics. Every year I splurge a bit on a few nice pairs of jeans, some good quality solid color shirts (because kids can wear them with everything).
I find I save more money buying good quality jeans than if I had to replace them several times throughout the year. After some experience shopping for my 3 boys, I learned that the cheaper jeans usually ended up with holes in the knee before the holiday break. When I switched to Gymboree jeans, I finally had jeans in good enough shape that they could be passed down to the next kid. I have some jeans that made it through all three boys, which is crazy! Right now they have many styles on sale for under $14 too so you get a lot for your money.
Look for styles you can mix and match.
I find that I get the best value when I buy pieces that can be mixed and matched. Not only does this give you more outfit combinations (which definitely comes in handy if you are behind on laundry) but it makes it much easier for younger kids to dress themselves. For girls, I love picking out a really cute pair of leggings and choosing 3-4 shirts that can be worn with them. Gymboree has leggings on sale for only $8 so hurry and stock up before the sale ends.
Those shirts can then be paired with jeans or multiple colors of leggings. There are so many combinations it’s like having a brand new outfit all the time.
Buy a size up.
Kids grow so fast. This past year I had to buy my oldest son new shoes and clothes about every 3 months because of how quickly he was growing. You can save some money by buying a size up. This works a bit better on shirts than pants. I find I can get away with buying a size or even two bigger in shirts and still have them for my kids to wear immediately.
For dresses, I often buy two sizes bigger since the dresses just get shorter as they grow. Something like this cute tunic dress could easily be worn when it is a bit big and at only $14 it is a great deal.
Think in layers.
Right now you can get some amazing deals on clearance summer clothes. You may not want to think ahead to next summer but what if you layered that summer dress with a cute cardigan to make it work for fall and winter?
Something like this clearance dress (which is a steal at under $6!) could be paired with a navy or white cardigan and would be perfect for fall. If it gets especially cold where you live, find a nice pair of leggings to go underneath the dress.
Go with solid colors.
If your kids don’t have a large wardrobe, opt for as many solid colors as you can. It’s less noticeable when a shirt is worn often.
This time of year you can get great deals on school uniforms. Even if your school isn’t a uniform school, grab a few solid color polo shirts or nice pants at a discount. The quality is usually great and they are classic styles.
Check out this 40% off uniform sale and snag a great deal on some quality clothes.
Good luck on your back to school shopping! There are some great deals out there if you keep your eyes peeled. Don’t forget that right now you can get 40% off the entire store plus free shipping at Gymboree! That’s a great way to stretch your budget!
