Finding the best backpacks for middle schoolers can feel like just one more thing on your endless back-to-school checklist. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with a roundup of the top backpacks that’ll keep your kid happy and give you one less thing to stress about.

Your middle schooler is likely preparing to lug around a small library in their backpack… and let’s be honest, they’ll try to squeeze in the kitchen sink too if they can. Their backpack needs to keep everything organized and be ergonomic enough to prevent them from groaning about their back like a retiree by the end of the day.
These backpacks are the best for middle schoolers and stylish enough that your teen will carry them around proudly.

What we look for in Middle School Backpacks
It’s clear that anything middle schoolers use needs to withstand a beating. Unless you want to be buying a new backpack mid year, buy a brand that is going to last. Because of this, we tend to like skateboarding brands because they know how to do durability.
Middle Schoolers are trying to figure out their own personal style. They need to be involved in the selection process when it comes to backpacks. Unlike clothes, that can change out every day, a backpack is something that will be with them every single day so it’s important that they have a say in what it looks like.
Those middle school backpacks get HEAVY. Let’s make sure that your middle schooler has a backpack that is ergonomic. They are too young to be dealing with back issues! Coming from someone who had a high schooler in physical therapy because of a backpack that got a bit too heavy and started wearing down his shoulder muscles, trust me, you want to try and prevent any issues before they pop up.
Why do I like laptop backpacks for middle schoolers?
I tend to buy laptop backpacks for middle schoolers. I’ve had several of you ask why since most schools don’t allow students to bring their own laptop to school.
The reason I like laptop backpacks for middle schoolers is because most middle schools are now 1 to 1 schools, which means students have access to a Chromebook or other device during the day and are responsible for carrying it around during the day without damaging it. That means even if your child isn’t carrying their own computer around they will have a computer in their backpack.
For students who are not responsible for carrying around a laptop or tablet during the day, I still like the laptop section of these backpacks for keeping papers organized and preventing them from getting wrinkled if they have something important they need to bring home … like school pictures.

What Size Backpack Does a Middle Schooler Need?
Most middle schoolers need a backpack that is large enough to hold a binder, folders, a Chromebook or laptop, lunch, a water bottle and a few personal items. For many students, a backpack in the 20- to 30-liter range works well, although the best size depends on the student’s height, schedule and how much they carry each day.
A smaller sixth grader may be more comfortable with a backpack closer to 20 liters, especially if the school provides lockers or students do not need to carry every book between classes. Older or taller middle schoolers may need something closer to 25 or 30 liters if they regularly carry several binders, a laptop, gym clothes or after-school gear.
The backpack should not be wider than your child’s torso or hang far below the waist. Look for adjustable, padded shoulder straps so the bag can sit close to the back instead of pulling backward. A padded back panel and sternum strap can also make a heavier load feel more comfortable.
Before buying, check the dimensions of the laptop compartment if your child carries a school-issued Chromebook. A backpack may look roomy but still have a sleeve that is too small for the device. It is also helpful to choose a bag with at least two main compartments so heavier books can stay close to the back while smaller supplies remain organized.
The biggest backpack is not always the best option. An oversized bag can feel bulky on a smaller student and may encourage them to carry more than they really need. The goal is to find a backpack that has enough room for daily essentials while still fitting your child comfortably.
