Has your adolescent missed routine vaccinations this year? Routine vaccinations have gotten a bit lost in the shuffle as the world deals with the pandemic, but they play such an important role in keeping kids healthy. If you are putting routine vaccinations on hold due to pandemic concerns it may be time to schedule an appointment for your adolescents.

There have been so many safety concerns over the past year. Schools have changed dramatically. Events have been canceled. Routine health care has taken a hit too with many parents postponing routine vaccinations and well-child visits.
Many visits are now being rescheduled but there is still a huge gap, especially among adolescents who are overdue for routine vaccinations.
I have 3 teens and I know I’ve been guilty of postponing routine appointments at times during the past year. When there is so much going on, it often feels like the routine things can wait until later.

The problem with that is missing well-child visits can cause important health issues to be overlooked by missing time-sensitive screenings and can throw off your adolescents’ immunization schedule.
Some parents have concerns about safety. The good news is, healthcare providers are doing an amazing job of keeping patients safe. We’ve had great experiences with our healthcare providers during the past year and always felt like they were taking appropriate precautions.
Which routine vaccines do adolescents need?
The CDC recommends vaccines that protect against serious illnesses, including meningitis (2 vaccines), cancers caused by HPV, whooping cough, and flu. These are especially important as adolescents return to in-person activities that require up-to-date vaccinations such as summer camps, sports, and school.

Right now 4 out of 10 parents say they have missed or delayed healthcare visits during the pandemic. Now is the time to catch up on well visits and routine vaccinations.

My family took the time to schedule any missed visits before we get into our hectic summer schedule. I was so glad to get those out of the way so I know the young adults in my family are protected.
