Gingerbread Play Dough Recipe

I’m a sucker for fabulous smelling play dough recipes and this gingerbread scented play dough is perfect during the holidays. I love this homemade play dough recipe. It’s super easy to make and smells amazing. Bonus: it doesn’t get stuck in your carpet like store-bought play dough does.
My kids love hanging out in the kitchen and making their own dough creations while I cook dinner (check out our review of The Learning Tower for great way to bring them to the counter safely)
Gingerbread Play Dough Ingredients
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 2 tsp. Cream of tartar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
- 1 Tbsp. each – cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg
Gingerbread Play Dough Instructions
Combine flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
In a separate bowl, combine the spices until you get the scent you want. Don’t be afraid to go overboard on the spices. You aren’t eating this so it can’t be too strong.
You could use essential oils in this instead of species if you want a stronger fragrance. Check out my favorite essential oils and find out how to buy them here.
Add your spices (or oils) to your dry ingredients.
In a separate bowl, mix the water and oil. Add the water/oil mixture to the dry ingredients. mix well then heat the entire mixture in a pot for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. The play dough will start to pull away from the sides and form a dough-like consistency.
Remove your dough from the heat and allow it to cool.
Once cool, knead the dough until it becomes smooth. Now you are ready to play!
Use leftover gingerbread play dough as a base for a Pine Cone Christmas Tree. This is one of our favorite holiday crafts!
