Green Smoothie Cubes
I love green smoothies. They appeal to my lazy side because I can get my veggies in without having to think much about what I’m eating.
At the same time, making sure I have fresh greens in the house and getting them prepped for a smoothie. Honestly, sometimes all that prep work makes me just choose another (usually less-healthy) snack.
These green smoothie cubes are the perfect solution and a major time-saver. You can prepare all your greens for the week at the same time and have them all ready to go when you need them.
What you Need
- Greens – I like to use a combination of kale, spinach, and chard so I can use them in my favorite green smoothie recipe. Any greens will work here though.
- Water
- Freezer bags
- Ice-cube trays – I’d really recommend something like this covered ice-cube tray to prevent your greens from spilling in your freezer because it can be kind of a mess to clean up.
What to Do
I try to add as little water as I possibly can to these because I don’t want to water them down. You’ll need to add a little extra liquid to your smoothie since your greens are frozen so you don’t want to fill your smoothie cubes with too much water.
I pre-wash my greens, fill my blender (for the record, I LOVE my Blendtec), then add a small amount of water. The greens will release liquid as the blend so don’t worry about having enough for the full blender.
Once the blender full of greens has blended down, you can use that as the liquid to add some additional greens and make your cubes really dense.
Pour the greens mixture into ice-cube trays and freeze overnight. Use a covered ice-cube tray or use a piece of plastic wrap pressed against the surface of the liquid to prevent your greens from picking up any flavors from your freezer.
Once your cubes have frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag.
When you are ready to use your green smoothie cubes, throw a handful of them into your blender with some fresh fruit and water/juice. If you use frozen fruit with them you’ll need to add some additional liquid.
