How to Keep Cords and Wires Organized While Traveling
Thanks to Porte Play for sponsoring this post.Â
I swear my family takes more electronics with us when we travel than anything else. The sheer volume of cords and wires that end up shoved into our suitcases and carry on bags is a bit ridiculous. All of those cords and wires have to be organized or they just end up in a jumbled mess. Fortunately, we have some great solutions for you to help you keep your cords organized while traveling and focus on the things that are really important like making some amazing memories.
Before I learned some great ways to keep my cords and wires organized while traveling, it was not uncommon for my bag to look like this before a trip:
That’s not a great way to travel and it makes it nearly impossible to find anything. Now that I have a few tricks up my sleeves, my bag stays organized, I know where to find each cable and gadget that I need and I can focus on enjoying my trip.
How to organize cords while traveling
Take the Bare Minimum. Some cords can be used to charge multiple devices. If you can get away without charging at the same time, stick to one cord and use it for several devices. Make sure you are only bringing electronics you actually need too. There’s no reason to pack things with you (and risk your electronics being damaged or lost) if you don’t absolutely need them while you are traveling. I used to be in the habit of overpacking and I’d never end up using half the stuff I packed. Not only was that a waste of space in my suitcase but I risked losing or damaging items that could have stayed safe at home.
Keep larger chargers contained. There are few things as frustrating as getting where you are going and discovering that you left your laptop charger at home or that it is buried somewhere deep in the bottom of your bag. Be sure that you store it somewhere you can easily keep track of it. I used this cute Pull-Apart from Porte Play on my last trip for my larger chargers and small gadgets. It made things so much easier having everything in one place. I kept this in my laptop bag and it made it so much easier to pull everything out when I needed it. The top flap of the organizer has spaces to slip in smaller cords and accessories.
Keep cords wound up when not in use. Cords and wires get tangled so quickly, especially when you are pulling them out while traveling — things just never go back into a bag the same way they came out. Get into the habit of winding cords up and either putting them in something like the organizer above or using a cord clip to keep them contained. It’s such a quick little step but it makes a huge difference by the end of your trip when your bag organization tends to go downhill fast.
Use a small pouch for related cords and small gadgets. I’m a huge fan of using pouches to separate things when traveling (or any other time). I always pack my suitcase with zippered pouches for clothes and other items, why not my electronics too? These cute little pouches from Porte Play come in a set with two sizes and are perfect for all those little odds and ends. You can get them to match the larger organizer, which is perfect if you are traveling with a ridiculous amount of electronics and wires like I do.
Keep things you’ll need while traveling easily accessible. There are some thing you know you’ll need while you are on the road or on your flight. Keep those things easily accessible so you can grab them without doing too much digging around in your bag. For me, that means I need my battery pack in a spot I can access it because I always end up needing to recharge my phone while traveling.
This week I was on a work (with a bit of play mixed in) trip to D.C. and with a few red eye flights I definitely needed to charge my phone without waiting for a charging station to open up. Since I had everything organized, all I had to do was pull out my cute little Porte Play Pull-Apart organizer and pull the cord out to charge my phone. There was no rearranging my bag or digging for what I needed. It was all right there.
