How One Mom Turned her Law Degree into a Work at Home Career
There are some career paths that are typically not family-friendly. In the legal field, most jobs are known for long hours away from home.
Jamie Lieberman, a busy lawyer and mom of 2 wanted more flexibility in her schedule so she used her legal background to start her own business and create a work at home career that now helps so many other work at home moms.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jamie many times over the years and I love her passion for what she does. She is genuinely interested in helping other people and is always quick to help if you have any legal questions.
For small business owners and bloggers, her site Businessese is an amazing resource. It’s the first place I go when I need DIY legal forms or want to take a course to help me take my business to the next level. If you need a lawyer who understands the digital landscape, Hashtag Legal is definitely the first place you want to look.
I had the chance to interview Jamie and chat with her about what life is like as a work at home lawyer and we loved getting a peek into her life as a work at home mom and busy lawyer.
Tell us a little bit about what you do as a work at home mom:
Jamie: I am an attorney and partner in Hashtag Legal, a law firm that works with online businesses. I represent influencers, brands, agencies and online entrepreneurs. My favorite thing to do is work with small businesses and help them grow.
What does the typical day look like for you?
My day is very scheduled!
I wake up and get my kids ready for school and then I go straight to the gym (me time!). After the gym, I start my work day, which can vary depending on my schedule.
Most days I am working on matters for clients and talking to clients on the phone or via Skype. Other days I am being interviewed on a podcast or conducting webinars. Either way, every minute of my work time has a task assigned to it.
How did you get started working from home?
I knew I wanted more flexibility in my work schedule after I had my first son and traditional legal careers do not typically provide that. I left my full time legal position in hopes I could find a job where I could work from home.
In the end, starting my own business was the best fit for me.
As a work at home mom myself, I love see what other mom’s workspaces. I feel like it really gives us a glimpse into your day and I love being inspired by what other moms do to create their workspace. Can you tell us a little bit about your workspace?
I have a desk that is not nearly large enough! Â I try to have a few personal items, like these really fun Funko Pop Golden Girls figures and some of my kids’ art work, but mostly I have work items, like documents and my notebooks where I keep my to do lists.
I work on a Macbook Pro and have really good noise cancelling headphones, which were a gift from someone I am forever indebted to.
(Side note from Rachel – I have these noise cancelling headphones and they are a lifesaver!)
What is the most challenging part about working from home for you? Is there anything that would make that problem less frustrating?
The most challenging part is the fact that, since I am home, people frequently forget that I am working all day and don’t have the flexibility to drop work at the last minute.
What do you enjoy most about working from home?
I love the fact that I don’t have to commute! Â It enables me to work the same amount in less time. I also have control over my schedule, so if I want to, I can chaperone a school trip or take one of my children to a doctor’s appointment.
What advice would you give to moms who want to work from home in the legal field?
I would recommend making sure you have excellent childcare and set boundaries in advance so your family and friends know when you are working. It makes all the difference!
Great read ladies! So, I too am in the legal field, as a legal secretary (15+ years). I am in desperate need of work flexibility and would love to find my niche so I can work from home . With my experience, any ideas if there a place for someone like me? Thanks for any input you can give 🙂
I bet there are some great options for you. I’d start by contacting some local law offices and see if they need any work. You may have some companies near you that haven’t thought of hiring a work at home legal secretary but it may work out great for them.

Physical offices are becoming less relevant as we’re in the information age. It’s great to escape the brick and mortar!
