Pregnancy Guide – Week 29
Nesting
This is just want it sounds like – Mama bird preparing her nest before the eggs hatch! At some point in your pregnancy you may be overwhelmed with the urge to clean, straighten, organize, purge, and get your home into ship-shape order before you deliver. This is all well and good as we can all you use a little extra motivation when it comes to cleaning house. But there are some things that you need to keep in mind.
1. Do not inhale fumes of cleaning products. This is even more important when you are pregnant as it can have adverse effects of on the fetus, as well as make you sick. If possible use “green” cleaners that have little to no chemical make-up, thus resulting in lower fumes.
2. Wear gloves when using cleaning products. Your skin is likely to be more sensitive than usual, so you want to take this extra caution.
3. Obey your doctor’s weight lifting limitations. If you have been told to not lift more than 20 pounds, then don’t do it. The reason for the caution is to limit the strain on your abdomen, especially later in pregnancy as it can result in pre-term labor. Also, since there is a basketball in front of you, it is difficult to use proper lifting techniques (holding item close to your body), so be careful. If you want things moved, call in hubby.
4. Don’t get carried away with tossing items. If you are making a mass exodus of a room, move everything destined for the dump to the garage and come back in a day or two and make sure you want to dispose of the items
5. Do not over do it! Take breaks often! You cannot risk over working yourself, especially as your pregnancy progresses. So limit yourself to one room a day.
6. Remember that your baby is not going to come out and ask why your baseboards aren’t clean. While you want to have a safe and sanitary environment for your child, you do not need to break your back for a white gloved inspection.
7. Ask for help – there is nothing wrong with calling in a maid service for one good deep cleaning of your home the week before your due date – in fact this is a great thing to hint at when someone asks what they can get you.
