Ultimate Guide to Road Trip Snacks

We are planning a 10 hour road trip with 6 kids and in our family that means we pack lots, and lots of snacks. I’ve found that one of the best ways to keep my kids happy on a road trip is to just keep feeding them so we load up on snacks. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite snacks to take on a road trip (or even a day trip).
These snacks are perfect on the go and by brining our own snacks we save so much money. That leaves more money for fun things, right?
Constant snacking on the road has a few perks.
- It keeps kids occupied (and occupied kids are much happier).
- It keeps the grumps at bay. Everyone in my family gets grumpy when they are hungry (and I’m the worst of all) so by keeping plenty of snacks on hand I can feed away the grumpiness.
- Full kids fall asleep. You know that after Thanksgiving nap. Same idea applies to snacks. I keep my kids nice and full on trips and we usually have at least a few good long naps. It makes the trip go by faster for everyone!
We pack cold snacks and regular snacks when we are ready to head out on a trip. Our cooler is loaded with snacks and we usually have a bag of more shelf-stable items that will last for our whole trip.
A few ideas for the cooler:
- Yogurt – Yoplait is our favorite and our local Walmart has a great variety, including Yoplait Original, Light, Greek, and Gogurt®.
- Cheese sticks
- Sandwiches
- Juice
- Water
- Carrot sticks
- Apple slices
- Mandarin oranges
I like to keep a few shelf-stable snacks in a bag that we can eat throughout our trip too. I actually try and leave a bag of snacks in my van all the time so we always have something to snack on if we need it on the go. For this snack stash, I look for things that do fine in heat (so nothing that’s going to melt) and can be stored for several weeks without going bad.
Some of our favorite are:
- Granola bars
- Pretzels
- Small bags of chips
- Nuts
- Dried fruit
- Fruit snacks
- Freeze dried fruit
