Activities to Get Kids Excited About Fire Safety

Teaching kids about fire safety is so important. Having emergency fire escape plans in place and helping kids understand about fire prevention can help keep them safe. The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) has some amazing new resources to help families and educators teach children about fire safety just in time for Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10).

Fire safety is an important subject in any home. It has been especially important to my family after we were evacuated from our home due to wildfires and realized just how unprepared we were for a home fire as well.
Since then, we’ve worked at taking some important fire prevention steps and educating our whole family about the importance of fire safety.

My oldest daughter has a lot of fears right now so when I told her that we were going to be learning about fire safety for Fire Prevention week, she was nervous. She said it was scary. A home fire has always been a fear of mine too, but I’m a big fan of fighting fear with preparation and prevention.
It was important to me that we found a way to teach fire safety without making my kids fearful. The National Fire Protection Association has some amazing resources for families and educators.
Sparky.org is the kid-focused site while SparkSchoolhouse.org has fire-safety resources for teachers and homeschoolers.

We are homeschooling this year so I loved finding so many educational resources in one place. My girls had a blast spending the day learning about fire safety and they unanimously decided to be fire fighters for Halloween after learning about all the ways they keep us safe.

Check out these resources to get your kids excited about fire safety!
1. Fun Fire Safety Videos
My girls LOVED the engaging fire safety videos on Sparky.org. The story of Sparky the Fire Dog really grabbed their attention and they couldn’t get enough of the cute music videos.

My girls learned so much about fire safety by watching the videos on Sparky.org. After watching, we walked around our house to spot safety hazards and make sure we knew of at least 2 ways to exit each room.
2. Fire Safety Activities
We are always up for some hands-on fun. There are some amazing fire safety activities here that you can work through as a family, as part of your homeschool day, or in your classroom. We started working on them and my oldest daughter said, “Mom, these are REALLY good”.

We found so many fire safety activities we want to do that I think we are going to have things to keep us busy for all of Fire Prevention Week.
My girls loved the games and crafts. The Color by Number pictures were a huge hit. They put them on display when they were done so we have some fun things to look at all week.

3. Read Together
Reading together with your kids is a fantastic way to learn. SparkySchoolhouse.org has some fantastic fire safety eBook options that you can read together.
We printed a few out and will read them throughout Fire Prevention Week.

4. Create a Fire Safety Plan
One of the most important things we did as we learned about fire prevention was to create a family fire safety plan. We had one in place that we made years ago but it is so important to update it often and make sure that even the smallest members of the family know what to do.
I LOVED the Anchor Chart Printable Kit. Download the images to make your own here.
We printed out the Smoke Alarm Safety Sheet to remind us to check our smoke alarms every month.

Having a plan in place and knowing my kids understand what to do in an emergency makes me feel so much safer.
We’ll definitely be using these resources going forward and plan to incorporate some of the fire safety lesson plans into our homeschool curriculum.
