Gaming Halloween Costumes Teens Will Actually Want to Wear
Looking for gaming Halloween costumes that work for teenagers? These video game costume ideas include funny, creepy, easy and more elaborate options for teen girls and boys who would much rather dress as a favorite gaming character than wear another random Halloween costume.

Looking for gaming Halloween costumes that work for teenagers? These video game costume ideas include funny, creepy, easy and more elaborate options for teen girls and boys who want to dress as characters they already know and love.
I’ll admit, I never used to be a huge fan of video games.
I think I had a pretty limited view of them. In my head, gaming mostly meant sitting on the couch for hours and wasting the day away.
Then I watched my own teens get into gaming, and I started seeing it very differently. I think it was Covid that really changed my opinions because I saw how much gaming really meant to my teens.
I’ve seen them use video games to really connect with friends, not just casually, but in ways that helped them strengthen friendships and feel like they were part of something. I’ve watched them discover interests they didn’t have before, get excited about stories and characters, explore art and design, and find creative outlets I honestly had not thought much about before.
That doesn’t mean I want anyone gaming 14 hours a day. I am still a mom, after all.
But I do understand now that video games can be a lot more than I gave them credit for.
And once your kids become teenagers, Halloween costumes usually work better when they connect to something your teen is actually interested in.
Teens may still want to dress up, but they tend to have very specific opinions about what counts as cool. Mom randomly choosing something from the costume aisle is not always the winning strategy.
That is one reason I really like gaming Halloween costumes for teens. They already know the characters. They already have favorites. And there are so many different directions you can go.
Some of these costumes even start to blur the line between a Halloween costume and cosplay, especially when your teen really gets into recreating a favorite character. That can make the whole thing feel a little more personal than just grabbing a random costume off the rack.
You can go creepy with Five Nights at Freddy’s, funny with Fortnite, nostalgic with Mario, or choose something that leans even further into cosplay with Zelda, Halo or another favorite game.

Minecraft Halloween Costumes
Minecraft is an easy place to start because the characters are instantly recognizable and the blocky style translates really well into costumes.
It also works for teens who don’t want an elaborate costume. A Creeper hoodie, union suit or pixelated mask can give you the look without requiring an entire cosplay setup.
Minecraft Creeper Costume
For a Minecraft fan who wants something comfortable, I really like the Creeper union suit.
It gives you the full Minecraft look without requiring much effort, and because it is essentially a giant fleece onesie, this is one of those rare Halloween costumes that may actually be more comfortable than your teenager’s normal clothes.
That is a Halloween win.
I especially like this type of costume for school Halloween events or cold-weather trick-or-treating because you have some actual coverage.
For a Minecraft fan who wants an easy Halloween costume, this Creeper union suit is a fun option that doesn’t require a lot of extra pieces. The pixelated green design is instantly recognizable, and the soft fleece makes it comfortable enough for trick-or-treating, parties, or just wearing around the house after Halloween.
I also like that it comes in adult unisex sizing, which can make it a better fit for older teens who have outgrown most kids’ costume sizes. The front zipper keeps it simple, and because it doubles as pajamas, there’s a good chance it will actually get worn more than once.
More Minecraft Costume Ideas
If Creeper isn’t your teen’s character, look for:
- Steve
- Alex
- Enderman
- Skeleton
- Zombie
- Creeper
- Chicken Jockey
- Minecraft armor
Minecraft is also an easy group gaming costume because everyone can choose a different character.
Five Nights at Freddy’s Halloween Costumes
If your teenager likes creepy games, Five Nights at Freddy’s practically did the Halloween costume planning for you.
You already have creepy animatronics. Masks. Dark hallways. General nightmare fuel.
Very efficient.
Freddy Fazbear Costume
The nice thing about Freddy is that people recognize the character even if they haven’t played every Five Nights at Freddy’s game.
The full mask makes this one more dramatic, so I would pay attention to where your teen plans to wear it. Some schools or Halloween events may not allow full-face masks.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is practically made for Halloween, especially for teens who like their video games a little creepy. This Freddy Fazbear costume includes the jumpsuit, mitts, and recognizable character mask, so you don’t have to track down a bunch of separate pieces to complete the look.
This one is officially licensed and comes in several kids’ sizes. The sizing does run smaller than regular clothing, so check the size chart carefully, especially if you’re shopping for an older tween or younger teen.

You could also look for:
- Bonnie
- Chica
- Foxy
- Springtrap
- Glamrock Freddy
- Roxanne Wolf
- Vanessa
- The Puppet
This is another really good category for a group of teenagers because the characters are supposed to go together.
Fortnite Halloween Costumes
Fortnite gives teenagers a LOT to work with because the characters range from cool to completely ridiculous.
And sometimes completely ridiculous is exactly what you want on Halloween.
Fortnite Peely Costume
Peely is still one of my favorite gaming Halloween costumes simply because walking around dressed as a giant banana is inherently funny.
You could spend months creating an intricate cosplay costume.
Or you could become a banana.
I respect both approaches.
This is also a nice option for a teenager who wants something recognizable without dressing as a character everyone else at school is likely to choose.
Peely is one of those Fortnite characters that works perfectly as a Halloween costume because it is recognizable, funny, and just weird enough to be entertaining. This officially licensed Spirit Halloween version gives teens the full banana look without needing to piece anything together.
I especially like that this one comes in an actual teen size, along with adult sizes, which makes it a much better option for older teens than many gaming costumes that stop at kids’ sizing.
More Fortnite Costume Ideas
Depending on what is available this year, look for recognizable skins and characters your teen already uses in the game.
This is one category where I would actually ask your teenager before buying anything.
I know. Radical parenting strategy.
Fortnite has so many skins that the one we think looks cool may be absolutely unacceptable according to the teenager who actually plays the game.
Super Mario Halloween Costumes for Teens
Mario costumes are classics at this point.
They are recognizable across generations, which makes them fun for teenagers without necessarily making them feel like little-kid costumes.
They are also one of the easiest gaming themes to turn into a group costume.
You could have:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Princess Peach
- Princess Daisy
- Rosalina
- Yoshi
- Bowser
- Toad
- Wario
- Waluigi
That works for siblings, friends or an entire family if everyone wants to join in.
Yoshi Costume
I like using accessories for older teens because sometimes they want to participate in Halloween without wearing a complete costume all day.
A Yoshi hat and shell with a green shirt is enough to make the character obvious without turning Halloween into a full theatrical production.
Yoshi is a classic Nintendo character that still works really well for teens who want a gaming costume without committing to a full head-to-toe outfit. This officially licensed accessory kit includes the inflatable shell and Yoshi headpiece, so you can pair it with a green shirt and pants for an easy costume.
I like this one for older teens because it feels more like a fun nod to the game than a little-kid character costume, and the one-size adult fit gives you more flexibility with sizing.
Princess Peach Costume for Teens
Princess Peach is a great gaming Halloween costume for teen girls because the character is recognizable immediately and there are several ways to do it.
You can go with the full pink dress, or make it more casual with pink clothing, a crown and Peach accessories.
For a school costume, I actually like the casual version because it is easier to sit through classes in and can be adjusted to meet dress-code requirements.
This officially licensed Princess Peach costume is a fun pick for teens who love Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. The set includes the classic pink satin dress with peplum detailing, sparkling petticoat, attached amulet, and a gold crown headband to complete the look. It comes in a wide range of adult sizes, making it a good option for older teens who may have outgrown kids’ costume sizing.
Princess Daisy or Rosalina
If your teen wants a Nintendo costume that isn’t quite as obvious as Princess Peach, Daisy or Rosalina are fun alternatives.
These are especially useful if a group of friends wants to coordinate costumes without everyone fighting over the same character.
This Princess Rosalina costume is a fun option for teens who want a Nintendo-inspired Halloween look that feels a little less common than Princess Peach. The teal floor-length gown comes with coordinating accessories including a crown, earrings, gloves, brooch, and magic wand. It’s available in adult sizes from XS through 3XL, which makes it a useful option for older teens who need more flexible sizing.
This Princess Daisy-inspired costume is a great pick for teens who want a bright Nintendo Halloween look that stands out from the more common Princess Peach costumes. The full set includes the yellow gown, crown, earrings, and white gloves, with puff sleeves, layered skirt details, and the signature orange accents. It comes in adult sizes XS through 3XL, which gives older teens more flexibility with fit.
Legend of Zelda Gaming Halloween Costumes
Zelda is one of my favorite gaming themes for older teens because the costumes can look more like cosplay than a traditional packaged Halloween costume.
Link Halloween Costume
The Link-inspired hoodie you already have in the larger teen-boy Halloween guide is perfect for a teen who wants to participate without going all-in.
Add neutral pants and boots and you have the general look.
Then the hoodie can actually be worn after Halloween.
Any costume that does not immediately become a $40 wad of polyester shoved into the back of a closet gets bonus points from me.
For teens who want a gaming costume they can actually wear again, this Link-inspired hoodie is a good option. The green hooded design gives it an obvious Legend of Zelda feel without requiring a full cosplay costume.
It comes in adult sizes from small through XXL, which makes it especially useful for older teens. Since it is basically a sweatshirt, it also works well for school Halloween events, colder weather, or teens who do not want to go all-in on a costume.
For teens who want to go all in on the Link look, this officially licensed costume gives them the full setup without having to piece everything together. It includes the classic green tunic with attached chest strap, detachable belt, and Link’s signature hat. It’s a great choice for Legend of Zelda fans who want an instantly recognizable Halloween costume that feels more complete than a simple character-inspired outfit.
Princess Zelda Costume
For teen girls who want something more elaborate, Princess Zelda gives you a gorgeous gaming costume without defaulting to the same Halloween characters everyone else is wearing.
There are several versions of Zelda’s look, so this is another case where it is worth asking which game your teen prefers before ordering.
Teens notice these details.
Ask me how I know.
This officially licensed Princess Zelda costume is a great pick for teen girls who want a recognizable Legend of Zelda look without having to build the outfit piece by piece. It includes the dress, detachable belt and buckle, leggings, and character hat, giving it a more complete costume feel. There’s also a teen/juniors size option, which can be especially helpful for younger teens.
This officially licensed Princess Zelda costume is a great option for teens who prefer her Breath of the Wild look over a traditional princess gown. It includes the blue top, pants, and belt, so it has more of an adventure-ready feel and should be easier to move around in for Halloween events or parties. It comes in adult sizes 4–14, which can work well for older teens.
Halo Master Chief Costume
For older teens who want something more dramatic, Master Chief is a great option.
This one feels much closer to cosplay because of the armor and helmet, and adult sizing makes it easier for teenagers who have outgrown children’s costumes.
The downside is that more detailed gaming Halloween costumes tend to cost more.
If your teen loves Halo, though, this is the kind of costume that could potentially be reused for conventions, gaming events or another Halloween.
For older teens who want a gaming costume that feels a little more serious, Master Chief is a great choice. This officially licensed Halo costume includes the armored jumpsuit, boot covers, and helmet with the signature gold visor, so the look is pretty complete right out of the package.
This one comes in adult sizing, which makes it a better option for bigger teens who have outgrown most kids’ costumes. It is definitely on the pricier side, but it has a much more detailed look than a basic costume.
Sonic the Hedgehog Gaming Halloween Costumes
Sonic is another character that crosses generations really well.
Teens know him. Parents know him. Younger kids know him.
That means no one has to spend Halloween explaining what they are supposed to be, which is always convenient.
For a teenager who doesn’t want the full jumpsuit, you could also create a simplified Sonic look with blue clothes, red shoes and character accessories.
Sonic is another gaming character that works really well for teens because he is instantly recognizable without feeling too young. This officially licensed Spirit Halloween costume comes as a hooded jumpsuit with boot covers, so it gives you the full Sonic look without a lot of extra accessories.
It comes in a wide range of adult sizes, including XS/S through XXL, which makes it a good option for older teens who need more room than most kids’ costumes offer. The jumpsuit style also keeps the costume simple and easy to wear.
Among Us Halloween Costume
If your teenager wants a funny gaming Halloween costume, an inflatable Among Us costume is hard to beat.
There is something about an enormous inflatable crewmate wandering through a school hallway that is objectively funny.
Just remember that inflatable costumes need a working fan, so check what powers it before Halloween night.
Nothing takes the drama out of being a giant video game character faster than slowly deflating in someone’s driveway.
Among Us is an easy win for teen boys who want a funny gaming costume that people will recognize right away. This inflatable version has the familiar crewmate look and makes a much bigger statement than a basic costume without requiring a bunch of separate pieces.
It comes in both child and adult sizes, so it can work well for teens who are between standard costume sizes. The built-in fan keeps it inflated while they wear it, but you’ll need batteries or a USB power bank to keep it running.
Gaming Halloween Costumes for Teen Girls
Gaming costumes definitely do not have to be limited to teen boys.
There are some fantastic female video game characters, and many of them work especially well for older teens who want something that feels more like cosplay.
Some ideas to look for include:
Princess Zelda
One of my favorites for a more elaborate costume. There are both full costumes and easier accessory-based versions.
Princess Peach
Easy to recognize and especially fun as part of a Mario group costume.
Princess Daisy
A great choice when your teen wants the Nintendo look but doesn’t want to be the same character everyone else chooses.
Rosalina
Another fun Mario-universe option that works especially well for a group.
Lara Croft
Lara Croft is a good option for older teens who want something that can be created largely from regular clothing rather than buying a packaged costume.
Keep the outfit appropriate for wherever your teenager is wearing it and focus on the recognizable adventure details.
For teens who want a Lara Croft-inspired Halloween costume, this set gives you the key pieces without making you build the entire look from scratch. It comes with a green vest, adjustable leg holsters, and a pigtail accessory for that classic adventure-ready Tomb Raider style. Pair it with shorts or fitted pants and boots to finish the look. It’s available in adult sizes XS through XXL, making it a good option for older tee
Samus
For teens who love Metroid, Samus is a fantastic choice and definitely more unusual than many of the gaming costumes you typically see.
A full Samus suit can get elaborate, but there are also more casual ways to reference the character.
This Samus-inspired Zero Suit costume is a great pick for teen girls who love Metroid and want a full character look without a lot of separate pieces. The stretchy one-piece bodysuit has a 3D-printed design inspired by Samus Aran’s Zero Suit and extends all the way to the hands and feet. It comes in a wide range of adult sizes, but the listing recommends sizing up and checking the size chart carefully before ordering.
Female Fortnite Characters
This is where I would let your teen take the lead.
Fortnite gives girls plenty of character options, and choosing a skin she actually plays will make the costume feel much more personal.
This colorful Loot Llama-inspired jumpsuit is a fun option for women or older teen girls who want a Fortnite-style Halloween costume without doing a complicated cosplay. The one-piece design includes layers of bright ribbon fringe, an attached hood with llama horns, a hidden front zipper, and even pockets. It comes in adult sizes XS through XXL and gives you that instantly recognizable Fortnite llama look in one easy costume.
Pokémon Gaming Halloween Costumes
Pokémon gives you another huge category of gaming costumes that can work for teens.
Instead of going straight for a full character suit, older teens may prefer hoodies, hats or accessories inspired by:
Gengar is particularly fun for Halloween because it already has a spooky look.
Pokémon also works really well for friend groups because everyone can choose a different Pokémon.
This officially licensed Pikachu accessory set is perfect for teens who want an easy Pokémon Halloween costume without wearing a full bodysuit. It comes with Pikachu’s signature ears on a headband and a matching tail, so you can pair it with a yellow shirt, hoodie, or dress and call it done. It’s a great last-minute option for Pokémon fans who want something recognizable but still comfortable to wear.
This officially licensed Eevee costume is a fun pick for teen girls who want a full Pokémon look without having to piece anything together. The soft dress features an attached hood with Eevee’s face and ears, a detachable fluffy collar, and a dimensional tail. It comes in adult sizes 4–20, making it a good option for older teens who want something cute, recognizable, and easy to wear for Halloween or cosplay.
This officially licensed Charizard costume is a fun choice for teen girls who want a Pokémon costume that feels a little bolder than Pikachu or Eevee. The soft jumpsuit includes a flame tail, detachable wings, and a hood with embroidered eyes, horns, teeth, and other Charizard details. It comes in adult sizes medium through XL, so it can work well for older teens who want a full head-to-toe costume that is still comfortable to wear.
This officially licensed Gengar costume is a fun pick for teens who want a Pokémon look that feels especially Halloween-ready. The soft hooded jumpsuit features Gengar’s signature face and has a relaxed, cozy fit that works well for parties, trick-or-treating, or school events. It comes in adult XS/S and L/XL sizing, making it an easy full-costume option for older teens who want something recognizable without a lot of separate pieces.
This officially licensed Snorlax costume is a great pick for teens who want something comfortable, funny, and instantly recognizable. The one-piece jumpsuit has embroidered Snorlax details and a detachable hood with the character’s signature ears, so it works as both a full Halloween costume and an extra-cozy outfit for parties or hanging out. It’s especially good for teens who care more about comfort than wearing something complicated.
This officially licensed Team Rocket James costume is a fun pick for Pokémon fans who want something more character-driven than a Pokémon onesie. The jumpsuit features James’s signature white Team Rocket uniform with the bold red “R,” plus coordinating gloves and shoe covers for a more complete look. It’s especially fun for teens doing a matching costume with someone dressed as Jessie.
This Pokémon Trainer-inspired costume is an easy choice for teens who want a recognizable gaming look without wearing a full character suit. The set includes a jacket, gloves, and trainer-style hat, so they can pair it with jeans or dark pants and finish the costume quickly. It comes in both kids’ and adult sizing, including adult sizes through 3XL, which makes it a flexible option for teens of different ages and sizes.
Mortal Kombat Halloween Costumes
For older teens who prefer fighting games, Mortal Kombat opens up several recognizable costume options.
Characters to look for include:
These tend to work better for older teens simply because many of the costumes are available in adult sizing and the games themselves have a more mature tone.
Just remember that Halloween costumes inspired by fighting games do not need actual weapons to make the character recognizable.
School administrators everywhere thank you.
This officially licensed Scorpion costume is a strong pick for teens who are into Mortal Kombat and want a full character look. The set includes the jumpsuit with attached tabard and shoulder guards, molded arm and leg guards, belt, and Scorpion mask, so most of the costume is already handled. It’s a good option for older teens who want something recognizable, detailed, and a little more intense than a basic gaming costume.
This officially licensed Sub-Zero costume is a great pick for teens who are into Mortal Kombat and want a full character look. It includes the jumpsuit with attached padded tabard and shoulder guards, plus arm and leg guards, a belt, and Sub-Zero’s signature mask. It’s an easy way to get the recognizable blue-and-black look without having to piece the costume together separately.
This Kitana-inspired costume is a strong pick for teens who want a more detailed Mortal Kombat look. The set includes the blue jacket, pants, face mask, scarf, headgear, gloves, wristband, and arm guard, so it gives you a much more complete cosplay-style outfit than a basic jumpsuit. It comes in adult sizes XS through XL and is a good option for older teens who want to really commit to the character.
This officially licensed Raiden costume is a great pick for teens who want a classic Mortal Kombat character with a really recognizable look. The set includes the detailed jumpsuit with tabard, belt, hood, wrist guards, and Raiden’s signature hat, so most of the costume is already put together. It’s a strong option for older teens who want a full gaming costume without having to hunt down a bunch of separate accessories.
Easy Gaming Halloween Costumes for Teens
Not every teenager wants a full costume.
Some want to participate just enough that technically no one can say they didn’t dress up.
I know this stage well.
For an easy gaming Halloween costume, start with something your teen already owns and add one or two recognizable accessories.
Some easy ideas:
Link: Green hoodie + boots + elf ears
Mario: Red shirt + overalls + Mario hat
Luigi: Green shirt + overalls + Luigi hat
Princess Peach: Pink outfit + crown
Lara Croft: Adventure-style clothes + braid
Pokémon trainer: Casual athletic clothes + Pokémon hat/accessories
Minecraft: Creeper hoodie or pixelated mask
Sonic: Blue hoodie + red shoes
Fortnite: Recreate a favorite skin with regular clothing
These are especially useful for school because your teen can often remove the accessories if they become annoying during the day.
Gaming Halloween Costumes for Groups
Gaming themes are perfect for groups because most popular games already have a cast of recognizable characters.
Super Mario Group Costume
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Bowser, Wario and Waluigi.
This one could easily handle a fairly large friend group.
Five Nights at Freddy’s Group Costume
Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy make an instantly recognizable group.
Minecraft Group Costume
Steve, Alex, Creeper, Enderman, Skeleton and Zombie.
Pokémon Group Costume
Everyone picks a different Pokémon or mixes trainers with Pokémon.
Fortnite Group Costume
Each person chooses a favorite skin.
This may be one of the easiest ways to get a group of teenagers to coordinate because they don’t actually have to agree on wearing matching costumes.
What to Look for When Buying Gaming Halloween Costumes for Teens
Teen costume shopping has one major problem:
Sizing.
A lot of licensed gaming costumes are made primarily for younger kids, while teenagers are somewhere in that awkward space between children’s and adult sizing.
Before ordering, check the actual measurements instead of relying only on a label that says “teen.”
For older or taller teenagers, I often have better luck looking at adult XS, small or medium costumes.
I also look at:
Comfort
If they are wearing the costume to school for seven hours, comfort matters.
Masks, armor and inflatable costumes can be great for parties but annoying during a full school day.
Weather
If Halloween is cold where you live, look for costumes that can fit layers underneath or choose something like a hoodie, jumpsuit or fleece costume.
Masks
Check school rules before buying a costume where the mask is basically the entire look.
Reusability
Cosplay-style pieces, hoodies and accessories may be used again after Halloween, which makes me feel a little better about what I just spent.
Your Teen’s Actual Opinion
This one is shockingly important.
Gaming characters can have very specific versions, skins and designs.
If your teenager cares deeply about a particular game, involve them before you hit “buy.”
Otherwise you may discover that the character you picked is apparently deeply uncool for reasons no adult could possibly understand.
Which Gaming Halloween Costume Is Best?
If I were narrowing everything down, here’s where I would start:
For something easy: Minecraft Creeper
For something funny: Peely or Among Us
For something creepy: Five Nights at Freddy’s
For a serious cosplay look: Master Chief or Zelda
For a teen girl: Zelda, Princess Peach or a favorite Fortnite character
For a group: Super Mario
For something your teen can wear again: Link-inspired hoodie
For a last-minute costume: Mario, Luigi, Peach or a Pokémon trainer made from regular clothes and accessories
The biggest advantage of gaming Halloween costumes is that teens can start with something they already like.
You aren’t trying to convince them that a random costume you found online is cool.
They already know the character.
You just have to find a version they will actually agree to wear.
And, as anyone who has ever shopped with a teenager knows, sometimes that is the hardest part.
