As a parent, I want to help my teenagers succeed but helping with homework can be overwhelming, and it’s extra tricky when you have a teenager who isn’t motivated to do their homework. We all have a lot on our plates already so finding the time to learn (or relearn) the material you need to help your teenager with school can suck up a lot of mental energy.
I’m great with helping with the basics like editing papers or understanding assignments but when I have a teenager that needs help understanding the subject as a whole it requires a lot more work.
How to Help your Teen with High School Homework
- Establish a designated study area: It’s important to have a comfortable and organized space for teens to focus on their homework. Some teens struggle to work when their space is chaotic. Set up a dedicated homework space in your home that is free of distractions and has everything they need in one place.
- Make a plan: Having a plan for completing assignments can help teens stay organized and on track. Encourage your teen to create a daily schedule that outlines when they will work on their assignments.
- Set realistic goals: Instead of expecting teens to complete their entire homework in one night, break it down into smaller tasks. This will help them stay focused and less overwhelmed.
- Prioritize: Help your teen learn to prioritize their assignments in order of importance. This will help them stay focused on the most important tasks first.
- Don’t do their homework: It can be tempting to want to help your teen with their assignments, but it’s important to let them learn and figure things out for themselves. Offer assistance when needed, but don’t do the work for them.
- Take breaks: Homework can be overwhelming and it’s important to allow your teen to take breaks throughout the process. Encourage them to get up, move around, and take a few minutes away from their work.
- Keep the lines of communication open: Check in with your teen to ensure that they are staying on track and to answer any questions they may have. Be patient and understanding when communicating with your teen about their homework.
Where to find high school homework help
The good news is there are a lot of resources out there to help your high schooler with homework. You don’t have to tackle it alone and neither does your student. Get a few great people on your team to help make homework and the subject matter easier.
Use Resources through the school. The first place to start your search is with the school itself. Many schools offer tutoring hours, study hall periods, and other resources to help students get the help that they need.
Check with your student’s school (or better yet put them in charge of checking) and see what options are available to them.
Hire a private tutor. If your teenager does best with one-on-one help, a private tutor may be the best option. You can do this in person or look for an online tutor.
Have your teen participate in online group tutoring sessions. You can find several options for this online.
Use the internet for homework help. There are a lot of great sites out there that can help your students better understand a subject, whether you are using it to help your student find answers to specific questions or understand the subject matter. I’ve spent hours and hours searching for explanations for things on YouTube with my student and it hasn’t failed me yet. For explaining single concepts we have loved using Khan Academy when we need to visually see something.

When students really want to understand a subject well, the best option I have found for online homework help is Study.com. They offer really engaging videos that dive deep into a subject, including offering full courses and homework help modules on nearly every school subject your student needs.
This is especially helpful for subjects that you are a little out of practice with as a parent and may not be able to help your teen with unless you had some outside help.
I’m a former high school English teacher and even with that background I still find my memory fuzzy about certain things so I’ve used their English help and review courses to clarify topics on more than one occasion. Their short video lessons and quizzes are so helpful for clarifying topics that teens need a bit more help on.
