Candy Cane Hot Cocoa

There are few things I love more when the weather cools down than homemade hot cocoa. Homemade hot cocoa could not be easier and this festive twist on my classic hot chocolate recipe adds in the flavors of a holiday favorite — candy canes.
I used to buy all kinds of variations of store-bought hot chocolate until I realized how simple it is to make. This homemade version is not only more decadent than store-bought but it is also quite a bit cheaper and it uses ingredients that I always have on hand.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 5 cups whole milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. peppermint extract or peppermint oil (I LOVE the Young Living peppermint oil. It’s one that I always have on hand. You can buy it here.)
Preparation
Combine the cocoa powder and sugar. You can store it just like this so you have it already mixed and ready to go.
Put the cocoa/sugar mixture into a saucepan. Add 1 cup of the milk.
Bring to a boil, stirring often. This helps the chocolate to really combine with the milk. I love using my silicone wisk for this. It’s one of my favorite kitchen tools.

Add in the remaining 4 cups of milk. You can add more or less milk depending on how strong you want your hot cocoa to be.
Add peppermint extract or peppermint oil.
Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes. Use a candy cane as a stir stick to add some extra candy cane flavor.
