How to use White Noise the right way at bedtime
Thank you to Baby Oasis for sponsoring this post and giveaway.
Do you get enough sleep at night?
If you are a parent to a baby or toddler, the answer is probably no. Babies are not always a fan of sleeping. I sometimes wish we could swap the sleep habits of babies and teens because my teen would love to sleep until noon if given the chance. The good news is, you can use white noise to help your baby or toddler get a good night’s sleep.
They’ll be better rested and you can say goodbye to feeling like a zombie during daylight hours.
My twins and their older sister have been horrible sleepers. I genuinely don’t remember most of the first year of my twins’ lives because I was so tired. Fortunately, that experience taught me a lot about infant and toddler sleep habits and using white noise to help all of us get better sleep at night.
How does White Noise Help Kids Sleep?
You are probably already familiar with the idea of white noise. What you might not be aware of is most white noise machines to it all wrong.
That’s right, the white noise machine you thought was helping may not be doing much.
That’s because most white noise machines use stock sound clips that were not designed for sleep. There’s actually a huge amount of science behind white noise and what it does to our brain while we sleep so using stock audio files just doesn’t jive with that for me.
When I met with the people behind Baby Oasis, I finally understood why some white noise machines help and some don’t.
Baby Oasis doesn’t just make machines that make noise. They use world renowned experts in sound therapy who study the science of sound extensively so that they can develop sounds that actually support sleep.
That’s good news for your sleep habits.
Baby Oasis makes two models of white noise machines that are perfect for your baby. The S-580 is a bit larger and has more visual controls. My older daughter loves that one because she can turn it on by herself.
The BST-100B is my personal favorite because it packs so much into a tiny unity. It works, not only as a white noise machine, but also as a Bluetooth speaker so you can really customize the sounds that you want your baby to hear. This model is rechargeable, so you don’t need to be tethered to a wall (perfect if your baby is napping somewhere else during the day) and the size makes it perfect for travel.
What really sets Baby Oasis apart is the scientific research behind it. Each unit comes with a little booklet on sleep for new parents that is packed with information I wish I’d had as a new mom.
I’ve been using both of the Baby Oasis Sound Machine’s with my girls and the difference has been amazing. We were having trouble with my twins keeping each other awake at night. It was a frustrating cycle of one twin falling asleep, the other crying that she didn’t want to go to bed and waking the first twin up, then they’d switch and start the cycle all over again.
With the Baby Oasis sound machine running (using dolphin sounds because that’s their favorite), we don’t have that problem. They love helping me turn on the sound machine at night and they don’t fight me as much when it is time to go to bed.
With my older daughter, the biggest difference I’ve seen is she’s having an easier time sleeping through the night. She deals with quite a few fears and often wakes in the night and comes into my bed. The Baby Oasis Sound Machine has helped her wake less during the night. I suspect she was startling herself awake, given my experience with her blindsiding me with a foot in the face when she sleeps in my bed. The white noise seems to help her get back to sleep again quickly or stay asleep so she spends more time in her bed and less time in mine.
My kids are wanderers at night. They are constantly waking up and wandering from one bed to another. After 9 years, I am exhausted!
Getting my kids to stay in their beds is my biggest challenge! Everyone assumes it’s the baby that has me up…nope, it’s the 7 year old and the 5 year old triplets ?
