Safe Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play Alternatives

The Fisher-Price Rock n’ Play is one piece of baby gear that parents have sworn by. I used them with my twins and they were irreplaceable when I had two babies dealing with reflux. With the announcement on April 12, 2019, that Fisher-Price Recalled the Rock ‘n Play Sleepers have been recalled after being linked to infant deaths, many parents are reeling and trying to find a great alternative. These alternatives to the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play are great choices that won’t put your baby at risk.

Safe Fisher-Price Rock n' Play Alternatives

32 infant deaths have been linked to the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play since 2011. That is a scary statistic. Many parents swear by the Rock ‘n Play for getting babies with reflux to sleep and comforting babies who don’t sleep well in their crib. With the recall, parents are now looking for safer options.

I used the Rock ‘n Play myself with my twins after my pediatrician diagnosed one of my girls with reflux.

The problem is, babies should not sleep on a reclined surface unless under the direct direction of a doctor. Babies should be supervised anytime they are reclined.

Sleeping in a reclined position can block a baby’s airway during sleep if their head droops down causing suffocation.

Some babies enjoy being in a reclined position, which is why the Rock ‘n Play sleepers did so well, but after reports of nearly 30 infant deaths connected with the Rock ‘n Play, it is time to look at some alternatives.

All parents want their kids to sleep in a safe enviornment.

Rock n’ Play Alternatives

Halo Bassinet

Halo Basinet - Alternative to the Rock 'n Play

The top pick for Rock ‘n Play alternatives is definitely the Halo Bassinet. This sleeper is so versatile and is portable enough that it can be moved around the house as needed.

I always kept my babies in my room at night so they were close by. I love that the Halo Bassinet makes it easy to put this right up next to your bed.  It rotates and swivels 360°, making getting in and out of bed so much easier. The stable 4-point base adjusts to fit most bed heights (24 to 34 inches).

The Soothing Center includes a nightlight, 3 soothing sounds, 3 lullabies, a back to bed reminder and vibration – ALL with 30-minute auto shutoff. There are two pockets for easy storage for those things you use often too.

This bassinet is super sturdy not a tipping risk so it is a great choice if you have younger kids or pets who might knock into this.

Graco Simple Sway Baby Swing

Graco® Simple Sway™ Swing

For babies that really enjoy being propped up a bit, the Graco Simple Sway Baby Swing was a favorite when my twins were little (read our full review here). This swing does have a reclined seat, so it is not recommended for infant sleep, but it is a great way to calm down fussy babies or prop up babies with reflux after eating.

I loved having the ability to turn the swing either direction, depending on what your baby wants to look at or which direction she likes to swing, and all the features on the swing were really easy to use … which is important when you are dealing with serious sleep deprivation.

The footprint on this swing is fairly small, which is one of the major things people loved about the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play. I needed to fit two into a fairly small space with my twins and were able to do that with no problems at all.

SwaddleMe Swaddles

SwaddleMe swaddles - Alternative to Rock 'n Play

Some babies might enjoy the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play because it makes them feel snug. You can mimic that same feeling by using swaddles. My favorite swaddles with my babies have been the SwaddleMe swaddles. They are super easy to use (which is important in the middle of the night when you aren’t functioning at your best) and they are easy to wash (also important).

Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard Snuggle Suite

Graco Pack 'n Play Playard Snuggle Suite

The Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard Snuggle Suite might be one of the most functional pieces of baby gear out there. This can be used as a crib, a place to put down the baby in the living room, changing table, play yard, and travel crib.

It’s definitely a must-have.

We had two when my twins were little and got so much use out of them. These are lightweight enough that they can easily be moved around the house and are easy to fold up when you need them out of the way. We took ours with us whenever we traveled until my twins were nearly 3-years-old because it made it so much easier to get them to sleep at night.

Your baby can sleep in the bassinet attachment on top or directly in the Pack n’ Play.

DockATot

Dock a Tot - Alternative to Rock 'n Play

One of the thing parents loved the most about the Rock ‘n Play was how snug it made babies feel. You can get the same comfort for your baby with the DockATot. The DockATot makes your baby feel like she is back in the womb and is perfect for laying in, diaper changes, and safer co-sleeping.

The DockATot is one of the most portable options because it is so lightweight. It can be used inside cribs, on the floor, or in your bed.

This is definitely the easiest option for travel and I love how easy it makes co-sleeping. If you have older kids or pets, you may want to use this inside a crib if it is being used in the main living areas.

Tiny Love Cozy Rocker

Tiny Love Cozy RockerThe Tiny Love Cozy Rocker is not recommended for sleep, but some babies do enjoy being in a reclined position and this can be a great option to put your baby down when they are being supervised.

The head area allows for full range of motion for y our baby so it reduces the risk of flat head syndrome, which was a big problem with the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play.

It does have 2 recline levels so it can be used for both younger and older babies.

I love that this has the option to be a rocker or have a more stable base when you need it. There are some added perks such as vibration, a canopy and hanging toys that can be great if your baby is into those options.

The Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play has some serious fans out there. I was a huge fan of it with my twins. Finding a safer product that fills the same role is a challenge but we are confident that these products are the perfect alternative to the Rock ‘n Play.
