Teaching Teens to Play the Guitar (without Adding More to their Schedule)
Thank you Fender for sponsoring this post. Learn guitar at home with Fender Play!
Teaching my teens to love music and learn to play an instrument has always been a goal in my family, but actually making it happen has been another story. My teenager has always wanted to play the guitar, but we’d had a hard time fitting it in. Our schedules are very busy and, with 6 kids, it’s a serious challenge to keep up with lesson schedules for multiple kids. Fender Play makes it easy for your teen to learn to play the guitar, without adding anything extra to your schedule.
My teenager is super busy, and that’s a good thing most of the time. I firmly believe that teens need to have as many good things as they can to fill up their time. We’ve been lucky and haven’t had any major teenage challenge, but I’ve seen quite a few of the challenges that happen when teenagers get bored in my own family growing up.
I know that the few times I’ve caught my son spending his time in ways that I wasn’t happy about, it was ALWAYS because he was bored.
Even though we try and under schedule, at least as much as it is possible, we do make an extra effort to have lots of options that our kids can fill their free time with.
For the last few months, my son has been learning how to play the guitar with Fender Play. This online learning program can be fit into those extra moments that teens have in their schedule. There’s no set lesson time. Teens can learn at their own pace.
My teenager hasn’t done much independent learning in the past, so I wasn’t sure how he would do with this, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. He really took the initiative and it’s been so fun to see how much progress he’s made in such a short amount of time.
The time that he used to spend playing games on his phone or watching TV, he now uses to spend a few minutes going through a lesson on Fender Play or teaching himself to play one of his favorite songs from the song library.
The app lets him choose a path, so he can play the music that he loves, right from the beginning. I really thinking being able to learn with songs he was already familiar with really helped my son and helped him stay motivated to keep learning.
Fender Play incorporates top-quality 4K multi-camera video production to deliver a clear and unified curriculum, with an aesthetic that aligns to the overall Fender brand. Â Among the production elements incorporated for optimum teaching are a split-screen and an over-the-shoulder angle that provides a unique and valuable perspective for the new player.
I’ve loved seeing his confidence soar as he is able to play more and more of the songs he recognizes and listens to on a daily basis. The Fender Play lessons themselves give him clear instructions and add skills on bit by bit so he is able to learn incrementally.
