Water Painting – Mess-Free Toddler Activity
My toddler LOVES to paint. It’s probably her favorite thing in the world right now. I’m a mean mom and never let her do it though.
Why?
Because the last time I gave her paint (and paper, mind you) she painted the outside of my house red.
The time before that? she painted my kitchen table.
When it comes to painting, she just can’t be trusted. (She actually makes me think of my favorite children’s book. Maybe I’ve read that to her a few too many times).
She still wants to paint though and I don’t want her to scar her for life by denying her the right to create. That’s where water paining comes in. Water painting is a mess-free activity for toddlers that’s perfect if you need a creative activity to keep your child busy. All you need is water and a paintbrush. Any paintbrush will do.
Supplies
- Water
- Paintbrush – These can be any kind of paint brushes. We used tiny kid-sized brushes but you can also hit up your local hardware store for some big painting brushes.
- Container to hold water
Instructions
There are so many ways to do this. I set my toddler loose with a cup of water and a paintbrush and just let her paint on the sidewalk. She had a blast.
If you want to get a bit creative, here are a few other options:
- Practice painting abcs
- Play water tic-tac-toe – you’ll have to move fast if it’s hot out or your board will dry
- Paint shapes and have your toddler fill them in
- Trace your toddler’s hand
- Paint a road and have your toddler drive a toy car on the road before it dries
- Have your toddler pretend to be a house painter and paint the side of the house (be sure and tell her not to do that with actual paint)
There are all kinds of things you can do with this activity and it’s a great way to keep kids occupied with a safe (and mess-free) project if you need to get something done.
What’s your favorite activity to do when you need to keep your toddler occupied?
