Full House – An Introduction to Fractions
I love teaching my kids educational concepts through books. Books make learning fun and snuggling up with a book before bed makes it easy to forget that you are teaching, especially when you are teaching more advanced math concepts like fractions. Full House: An Invitation to Fractions is a new book published by Candlewick Press that gives early elementary students a wonderful introduction to fractions without turning it into something overly complicated or frustrating.
This beautifully illustrated book written by Dayle Ann Dodds tells the story of the Strawberry Inn run by Miss Bloom who lives in one room and is looking to fill 5 available rooms with 5 guests. Each guest that arrives takes 1 of the 6 rooms and settles in for the night. Even the youngest readers will enjoy this light introduction to fractions. I read this book with my first grader and preschooler. My first grader was able to understand the basics of fractions through the fun story and clear illustrations and my preschooler enjoyed the story and was able to have a more general introduction to fractions.
Full House: An Invitation to Fractions i is a book that should be in every home library if there are early elementary school aged children or preschoolers in the home. Teaching fractions through storytelling is a wonderful way to introduce basic math concepts without tears.
