Staying on Track with your Weight Loss Goals During a Move
Thanks to Jenny Craig for sponsoring this post.
My family just survived an out-of-state move with 6 kids. That’s challenging enough on it’s own.
I complicated the matter by finally committing to losing my twin pregnancy weight just before our move and I didn’t want to lose traction despite the fact that our life was chaotic (see the beginning of my weight loss journey here).
Staying on track with your weight loss goals during a major life event is a huge challenge. I (very briefly) considered postponing my weight loss goals. The problem is, there is always something to stop you from reaching your goals. This time it was a move. Next time it would have been something else.
I knew, that if I was going to get serious about losing the weight, I was going to have to stick to it no matter what was going on in my life.
I’d started working with my Jenny Craig consultant about a month before my move.
After trying on my own to lose the weight for years, I was shocked when I lost 13 pounds in my first month.*
*Results not typical. Members following the Jenny Craig program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs. per week. I received promotional consideration.
That was huge for me!
You can really see the difference in the before and after pictures I took.
I love seeing the change in my profile pictures.
Suddenly I could fit into my smaller pants. My wedding ring fit for the first time since before my twins were born. I had way more energy.
As I got further along in my weight loss journey something really cool started to happen. My confidence in myself and my ability to stick with my new, healthier habits grew. I found myself being tempted less by some of the foods that had been a huge challenge to myself before because I knew it wasn’t worth it.
Seeing the numbers go down on the scale and noticing the positive changes in my life because of it were worth way more than a brownie.
I did cheat a few times. My sugar cravings got the best of me.
Before, I would have just thrown in the towel after a lapse like that. This time I stopped, reevaluated what I wanted, and got right back to work on making some healthy changes in my life.
I was right on track for where I wanted to be. Then our moving date started getting closer.
How do you stay on track during a move?
It was interesting making a major life change while working on creating major change in another area of my life. After coming out on the other side, with my weight loss goals mostly intact, I have a few recommendations for you:
Strengthen Habits Before a Change
I was glad, when the time came to move, that I had had some time to let my new habits get established a bit. It meant I wasn’t starting from scratch. I’d seen some progress and had enough success that I didn’t want to lose traction. That alone made me think twice before cheating during the crazy days before and after our move.
Make a Plan
My Jenny Craig consultant really helped me get through this process. She emphasized that all I had to do to make something work was go into it with a plan. That applied whether I had a day where I would be away from home for an extended period of time or packing up my entire house and moving to another state.
Jenny Craig has a great selection of pantry ready food. I’d eaten several food items as part of my personal menu on days when I knew I was going to be out of the house. For my move, my Jenny Craig consultant sat down with me and helped me create a menu made up of primarily pantry ready items so I could stay on track even during my move when I wouldn’t have access to a fridge for a few days.
Don’t let one mistake sideline your goals
My move did not go according to plan. It was delayed by almost a week and when we finally did move, our one day of travel time turned into two due to a late start.
I won’t lie . . . there was some fast food mixed in there a few times.
What made all the difference in the world to me, though, was knowing I had a support system at Jenny Craig. If my eating wasn’t ideal for a few days, I knew I could get back on track as soon as we were settled.
I took what I learned about portion size and eating the right foods and applied it while we were traveling. When I had no choice but to eat out, I made smarter choices than I would have before and I only ate until I was full.
Simplify things for yourself
I really loved having all my meals and portions planned out with Jenny Craig during my move. I didn’t have to think about anything . . . which was huge, because I already had so many things going on that I didn’t have any room in my brain for anything else.
All the work was done for me. All I had to do was eat.
Now that my family is settled into our new home, I’m getting back on track and excited to see where this journey takes me.
My weight loss slowed down a bit during my move but I was excited that I still managed to lose 2 pounds, despite all the craziness.
Slow progress is better than none! I’m hoping to hit the 20-pounds-down mark by the end of July so keep your fingers crossed for me.
